Project goal

The Australian Broadcasting Company wanted to provide a platform for kids aged 7-14 with content that satisfied adult and child concerns for age appropriate programming. Video on demand app 'ABC Me' was launched in August 2016 as a solution to this.

Approach

By utilizing foundational research done for the ABC Me project I was able to understand the concerns and needs of the target audience as well as their guardians. From this research, I conducted stakeholder interviews to ensure the brief aligned with their vision and the project overall entailed the following methodology:

  • Research review

  • Feature prioritisation

  • Competitive analysis

  • User flows

  • Interaction design

Information Architecture

Being an app for children, I made sure to categorise shows and episodes in a way that made sense to them. Children and adults don’t group things the same way. I opted for a clear, common approach that brought a program with all associated episodes together on the one screen. The users are able to interact with the episodes by 'reacting' to them with stickers that once selected, stick onto the episode thumbnail.

Personalisation

The theme of 'ME' was to run through the app. This was done during onboarding where a user can choose a name, avatar and colour scheme. In the app, the user has the option to save shows to their 'my shows' section allowing for quick access to their favourites.
