The Challenge

The Education team previously had an interactive template called ‘Digibooks’ which were a great resource for teachers to use in classrooms. Digibooks were lost in a tech migration, and in order to re-create and improve upon them, we chose to incorporate user research to inform our new designs.

The Process

UX Review
I reviewed the previous Digibooks designs and flagged any usability issues, confusing design patterns and noted suggested improvements.

Concept Designs
The next step was to re-design the interactive template as a concept that we could use to show teachers, and get real feedback on. We renamed the template ‘Video Chapters’ to better explain the functionality of the design.

User Research
We conducted four interviews with NSW teachers, two in-classrooms and two on zoom. These interviews included a discussion to understand the use of video in the classroom, and a usability test of the Video Chapters prototype.

Design updates

By testing our prototype with teachers in the classroom, we were able to refine the designs to suit being used on a Smart TV or projector. Text needed to be readable at a distance, contrast was important when using projectors, and buttons needed to be accessible via keyboards.
We moved the navigation bar to the bottom of the screen so that users of a touchscreen TV could access them easily.

Further recommendations

How teachers find content
There was a disconnect between how the Video Chapters were put together and how teachers actually search for video content that supports the curriculum. We shared these findings with the Education team so they could optimise each chapter for SEO.

Transcripts
Transcripts were important for checking if the material was relevant to the lesson.
Learning outcomes were requested as content to include so that teachers could quickly assess whether the interactive would achieve their lesson goals.

Designed for mobile, desktop, smart TV’s & projectors.

The result

Video Chapers is used by ABC Education for a range of video content. The templates were built to be used in Core Media (ABC’s CMS system) so that content makers could easily build them out.
